Frivolous Flappings

Which reminds me, one of my favourite quotes from the Quick and Dirty forum the other day was Fiona Mc talking about how Frivolity could be a form of Dissent. I love my people, really I do!

Bears, In Theirs

And a little in mine as well. For last night was UnderBears, surely Zoo's favourite Mardi Gras festivity. It never ever fails to amaze me, every bear that ever there was (I did coat check 9-12, with a Smurphe and some others, and we had hit the 900s with the ticket numbers!) comes out of their den to descend upon the other ghetto, get most of their gear off and dance about in their underwear being lewd... Ahhh... I wore My Very First Jockstrap, a black cotton number which I daresay did suit me and showcased my Smurphe bruisings, 'rag' tattoo and new cuttings rather well (and something about such butch underwear under my leopard print skirt on the way there from work made me very excited). Boots, black hanky, collar, green camo singlet and Lone Star cap completed the ensemble. I danced handbag to Shania Twain (damn, I feel like a woman) and countless other travesties, groped, got groped, suckled, drank beer, danced more, smoked, swapped spit and generally had a sweet trashy old time with the boys. Ahh...

Aside from the odd 'So, are you a lesbian?' 'Nah, I'm a Bear', 'Say what?' conversations, and one bra'd and knickered woman expressing amazement that I was wearing a jockstrap (in a 'you're so brave!' kind of way) it was really comfortable, and I could forget about gender and just be sweaty and stinky and furry.
That said, I did leave my singlet on the whole time so maybe I wasn't as cool as I thought? Or maybe its just a case of sometimes not wanting to have to make a point as such, and these tits on a dancefloor full of gay men gets more questions and comments than keeping them under wraps. Sometimes I just want to DANCE!

Walking Wounded

I am wearing a very 'flippy' skirt, with a sheer and diamante-d piece that falls from the hem and not only does it rub ever-so-softly against my new wounds as I walk but also gives the passerby an occassional glimpse of pretty red pattern against pale flesh. Subtle, but not that subtle.

Oh, and have I mentioned the way the bottom of my backpack lightly brushes against the top of my spanking bruises... Swoon... Puddle of Zoo all day. I like this, I like the memories at every step and having that slightly glassy-eyed look of the freshly-fornicated, the world in soft-focus...

Our House, In The Middle Of Our Street

Did I mention my new house?

Big room, double built-in wardrobe. View over Henson Park. Quiet street. Ceiling fan and light that operate by remote control, so I can lie in bed and play with my atmosphere. Kinky quirky housemates, and grown-up ones at that. A cute fluffy white dog that hides in cupboards. A fishpond. An outdoor entertaining area. And I GET THE ATTIC, which leads straight from my room, to store stuff in and play in and use as my workroom.

Its a very peaceful place, and makes me very happy. Yay!

Weekend Wrapup

Quick and Dirty. Both nights, plus the forum. Fiona McGregor in a cardboard coffin, covered in blue tissue paper parcels that one took whilst paying respects and which revealed packets of seeds when opened (I got broad beans). Pluto Savage covered in diamantes, sticking needles into his arm and ranting about queers who self-destruct and become all the bad that is expected of them by the 'straight' world. Ana Wojack climbling a scaffold in three sewn together wedding dresses, a mass of white fabric train falling behind her then blood dripping down, down, down, ending up as animal, beating bells and gowling at the audience. Wife's knitted outift slowly unravelling to show sutured skin, stitches pulled out slowly, soundtrack of Nina Simone. Biffo's blow-up tent, sneaking peeks inside at a true carnival of curiousities. Plus much, much more, and flirting and laughter and wet patches and shmoozing and conversation and creative ventures planned and plotted and the joy of being HOME.

Mad F$%#rs' Tea Party: Dykes on Bikes tattoo and bike show, then MFTP. There were cupcakes with pretty icing and cachous, and a very well-trained barboy/butler. I was caned before I had even got changed into my outfit. Then a lightning bolt was cut into my thigh, deep, whilst a Mermaid in a red hanky dress held my hand. I was drinking lovely Japanese beer. Before my leg had even stopped bleeding I was escorted to the shagpile, placed on a number of cushions, and spanked so hard my skin almost broke and I tried to hide under a beanbag whilst people laughed at me and the wicked boy delivering this ouchiness shoved an icecube it my bits to cool me down (wasn't entirely his idea but he carried it out rather too well!). My newbie friends had lovely sessions of piercings and electro play and knife play and ropes and whacky things. Then I was up against the St Andrew's Cross, having a rather lovely shoulder and back massage conducted via some rather heavy leather floggers (and one stingy bitch). I got to watch a lot of very sexy people be very sexy with each other, with yellow hankies and red hankies and orange hankies being fully appreciated. A person I thought may never start speaking to me again did start speaking to, and I felt relieved and grateful and very aware of just how much I had missed him. To top off the evening, I cuddled up into one of my favourite boys and grabbed his leg HARD for support as another lovely lady added a complimentary piece to my first cutting, going over and over some sections, and there was much slapping of my wounds, leaving a very lovely handprint on top of the first one, and a very messy floaty puddle of Zoo... Of course, after all of this I was massively damp-knickered and so took home some fun thing I played with last week to revisit vodka-fuelled wrestling and inserting of part A into part B (via parts C and D and maybe with parts E and F in the mix somewhere). Can barely walk today, for thigh and arse and pink bits all tender, but it is a magical pain that transforms and invigorates with every wince.

Oh, and there is a picture of me looking like a muppet in the latest SSO (at the QueerScreen opening night). Hilarious!

Just a pity it wasn't six months earlier so I could have visited her- guess this just means she will have to come and play down under?

In Love With Hans Bellmer

See Sue Taylor's Hans Bellmer In The Art Institute of Chicago: The Wandering Libido and the Hysterical Body for lots of beautiful images and some words too. Swoon. I also bought a very special Japanese book on his Poupee series when I was in San Fran, and I'm almost too scraed too look at it for fear I will explode with joy!

Speaking of wandering libidos- at the Slit launch there was a whole universe of amazingcreativegorgeousintelligentpervywomynandwimminandgirlsandgrrlsandtranniesetc and all I could think of was MAKING ART with them. Didn't want to shag them or flirt with them or even snog them particularly, just make some nice photos or videos and have a chat about our favourite works and go back home to a cup of tea and my Hitachi.

Of course, I am not in total denial of my flesh, and thus am MUCH looking forward to the Mad F$#^ers Tea Party tomorrow. Pointy things and spanky things and cling wrap too!

Along the lines of desiring/needing one's bits to bleed or make baby-batter, or squirt milk, if you get my drift... So much written about the meat but not the juice! Or maybe I am just missing it? As ever, Ali comes up with the goods:

Stuff White People Like

Sample:The majority of white person art is created after a difficult breakup; films, indie music, and poetry are all kicked into high production during the end of a relationship. This helps train white people to prepare for the pain that is coming.

Once breakup proceedings have been initiated, a white person is immediately thrust into the center of attention in their circle of friends. During this time, they are permitted to talk at great lengths about themselves, listen to The Smiths, and get free dinners from friends who think “they shouldn’t be alone right now.”

HIV+ Sex Workers

From Kane at Scarlet Alliance:

Sex workers with HIV is one group of people who are often hidden and ignored. We often hide our status, either our involvement in sex work, or our HIV status, or both, out of fear.

There is little known about what positive sex workers face, what their needs are, what their issues are (I know mine, but not every else's!), the last research being 15 years old. Scarlet Alliance is seeking involvement from as many positive sex workers as possible, so that they can accurately reflect what positive sex workers want & need to hopefully make improvements, or at least try! There are quite a few ways positive sex workers can contribute to this project, especially from non-NSW areas!

* Anonymous submissions * Focus Groups / Private Interviews * Share your stories in Pro-Vision with the sex worker community * Joining a private and confidential e-list for
poz-workers

Confidentiality and privacy are considered to be paramount, especially in areas where doing sex work with HIV is specifically criminalised. We have processes in place to ensure that contributions are confidential, de-identified and protects everyone who participates and additional measures can be requested. Scarlet Alliance believes that HIV positive people
have every right to engage in sex, paid or unpaid, and laws should be changed to reflect that, where necessary. Please contact KANE at Scarlet Alliance on Fridays on 02 9326 9455 or kanematthews1@ gmail.com

Same Sex Couples Allowed To Adopt In Israel

A happy-making report from SMH, Feb 11th 2008:

Israel has recognised the right of same sex couples to adopt a child, public radio reported.

The government's legal adviser Menachem Mazuz, who also serves as attorney general, said the state would no longer oppose such adoptions.

The only consideration was "the welfare of the child", he said.

Social Affairs Minister Yitzhak Hertzog welcomed the decision and said he could instruct the social services in charge of adoptions.

Despite opposition from the Jewish religious hierarchy, Israel in December 2004 also recognised the property and inheritance rights of gay couples.

However, only religious marriages are formally recognised in the Jewish state, where a ban on homosexuality was lifted in 1988.

Australia St And Chilled White Wine

Last night, 10pm, past corrugated fences barely visible under potato jasmine. Past the stencil art alien, pain splatters on the footpath, fresh-faced girls with bobbed hair and summer frocks, ballet slippers and bare legs walk with boys with long tresses and gym boots. Past the room where I first dabbled with a girl, past the Courthouse full of cold beer memories in the garden, past couples walking their scruffy dogs or holding each other up as they stumble along after too many chardonneys. Its good to be home.

Home Is Where The Zoo Is

Or will be soon- for it seems I have found a place! Touch more than I wanted to spend but has:

A puppy to play with
A big kitchen
An attic storage space from my room
A fish pond
Henson Park, home of the Newtown Jets, at my back fence
A view over the park from my window (I think)
A quiet neighbourhood

Plus one of my pervy pal's living there, with another postgrad-student type creature. So its not a party house all of the time, but it has its moments of wine, women and song (and the rest) to make pleasurable. And its close to Uni, and a few other mates live nearby. Oh, and its not a run-down hole of leakiness and broken things like many of my previous places. No mould in the bathroom or leaky taps! Yay! Ah, now I must find/buy a desk and chair, and a new big teapot, and organise the moving of stuff... Oh, the joy of a quiet house to study in! Day after day working on The Fever, of making costumes and curling up with a book. Bliss!

With one of those book-stands that I keep meaning to buy, the ones that hold your book open for you
A jar full of working pens, in several different colours, and many highlighters
An amusing box of paper clips, thumbtacks, rubber bands and other useful things
A nice thick corkboard
A wall planner so I can see at a glance what deadlines are coming up on me
A MASSIVE bookshelf, full of books of course
A comfy lounge, for when it all gets too much and I need a little lie down
A teapot and electric jug, with a selection of fine teas
Small bar fridge with soy milk and treats
Fresh fruit, nuts, nibbly things
A reading corning with a beanbag and cushions
Decent lighting
An ergonomic chair to sit on whilst I type away
A selection of artworks to inspire and comfort me
A stereo
A jug of water
Drinking vessels and plates and such, gloriously mismatched
A window I could open so the breeze could flow through and clear away my cobwebs...

Hair Cares

Sometimes, and only sometimes, I do like to ramble. Here's one I prepared earlier:

I will admit it once and for all: I am scared, or at least highly suspicious, of women who can go out in the middle of winter wearing only a pair of heels, a tiny mini-skirt, some shredded scrap of singlet, a teensy weensy jacket (often so small it is exposing midriff) and a skimpy g-string (if the viewing audience is lucky, or not, depending on one’s perspective). They never have any body hair, barely even any eyebrows, and although I recognise the principal of most body heat being lost through the head SURELY a big bouffant of styling product and curls cannot compensate for the near-nakedness of the rest of one’s skin. Can it? I do want to know though, who ARE these women? Are they human? Highly drugged? Aside from the apparent immunity to cold and bodily baldness, other common denominators seem to be a tendency towards vacuous yet smutty innuendo, drinking vodka shots and sleeping around with whoever is telling them they are the prettiest that night. Sort of homecoming queen meets riot grrl meets 5-year-old beauty pageant entrant, without any sense of irony.

I recently had the joy of being in an odd situation with one of these creatures, plus two of the sort of quasi-butch admirers such things attract. You know, the ones with faux-Sailor Jerry tattoos and too much attitude, quick with a joke and a light of your smoke and playing the no-good bachelor bad-ass card (without any sense of irony either- SNAP!). The butch most likely to was hitting on me, and as they were all getting a cab to a destination right near my hostel I agreed to split the fare, and somehow suddenly I had been persuaded to come upstairs for wine and shenanigans. Somewhere between alcohol courses, Miss Nearly Naked 2008 lost her knickers and became entangled with the quieter butch, leaving the butch most likely to jumping me on the couch. At which point the princess realises that somebody else (and a creepy genderqueer thing with underarm hair and a shaved head at that) was getting some of her attention and orders us that we can’t shag on her couch. I snuck out at the first opportunity and then I walk home, intoxicated and thanking my lucky stars for this spot of semi-rejection luck. Ego intact, and knowing that all was right in the world.

The next day I do the film shoot, meet someone genuine (i.e. the Real Deal), and when I am with her having a beer in The Lexington the butch most likely to comes over to the table. I can’t be arsed talking to her really, but somehow we become engaged in a conversation about body hair. Apparently, I and my furry parts are ‘like, so 80s’ and thus entirely unshaggable. Oh, dear. Thankfully the Real Deal doesn’t agree, and has never shaved anything, and so we roll around all night like a couple of old hippies. Much more my style.

Home Is Where The Art Is

Place I wanted to move into has fallen through, so am currently without a home to call my own. Hmm. So...

Housetrained and happy Zoo requires large bedroom/two rooms, that is, enough space for queen futon, costumes, clothes, sewing machine, desk, bookshelves and hopefully a big comfy chair or two.
Not a neat-freak, but not a total pig either. Can cope with some general mess, but not filth. At least, not that type of filth.
Genderqueer omnisexual pervert and academic, with smatterings of performance artist, journalist, events organiser, media slut, activist, freelance provocateur, rabblerouser and public spectacle.
Mostly vegetarian and full of soy-joy, own a big bbq and not afraid to use it. Smoke cigs sometimes, but always outdoors at home, and don’t have any pets. Don’t really do any chemicals anymore, but don’t mind if housemates do. Sometimes. But NO ice, seriously, and not willing to live with total potheads. Done that too many times before, and not very interested- sorry.
Currently working on The Thesis, and will be for the next couple of years, so will often be hidden away for weeks on end, emerging sometimes for tofu, beer, photo shoots, film shoots and random encounters of the artistic and down’n’dirty kinds.
Under $120 per week would be nice. Have bond, and regular income. So...?

In The Ghetto/Home On The Range

Well, what a beautiful homecoming weekend that was! Hanging out with my folks, then wandering into the Inner for a performance-planning date, followed by many jugs of New with a frenzy of mates at the Courthouse, doling out their Xmas pressies and telling tales tall and true. Then onto a mate’s place, walking myself sober as I walked to his place. Meet up with my Scragg and a naughty Smurphe, and a fab fag friend who wants to make me into a musical instrument. After quite a while I broke out the duty-free vodka, shared it around and drank a lot of it myself, talked gibberish, proposed art projects, giggled, cuddled, danced, passed out/dozed off, came to very confused and happy, ate cake and toddled back with the S’s for a nice big dose of shut-eye. Woke up between them, and felt all safe and warm and happy and floppy (not even much of a hangover- must remember to drink clear spirits more often). Then met up with Schwee for an afternoon of reading queer press and hanging about various cafes, before getting the train back to the ‘burbs. Sweet.

Got my Sydney mobile number up and running, so I’m easy to contact again. For those of you overseas, I lost a lot of your phone numbers when I switched back over so if you email me yours I’ll email you my Aus number and it’ll all be sorted, yeah?

Sadly though, my internet situation is not so easy. My parentoids are not creature of online habits, and the brother with web set up has left home. This leaves me having to haul my arse into the town to access overpriced and not very useful (i.e. mostly set up for gamers) net facilities. Should be back at Uni most days next week, and therefore online much much more, but until then it’d be easier to find me on my phone.
