Or stone gods in some strange ritual involving fire?
chitinous carapaced creatures scuttling through the sand, climbing the unearthly earthen mounds like anthills... or scaly shiny lizard-like things, frills and horns and claws and long whippy tails....
egyptian-y is a good idea, plenty of sand indeed... though no river or crocodiles.
taking a movie-themed tack, could go spaghetti western - dusty dry rough riders blowing in with the tumbleweeds, or riding some miscreant out of town... or considering the rather alien landscape, could go 60s sci-fi spoof with tentacles and good clean-living astronauts getting debauched by the catwomen from mars...
