Pink Elephant

More from ABC.net.au:

'A Polish politician has criticised his local zoo for acquiring a "gay" elephant.

Local media reports the elephant, named Ninio, prefers male companions and will probably not procreate.

"We didn't pay 37 million zlotys ($15.5 million) for the largest elephant house in Europe to have a gay elephant live there," Michal Grzes, a conservative councillor in the city of Poznan in western Poland, was quoted as saying.

"We were supposed to have a herd, but as Ninio prefers male friends over females how will he produce offspring?"

The head of the Poznan zoo said 10-year-old Ninio may be too young to decide whether he prefers males or females as elephants only reach sexual maturity at 14.'

Breathe In, Breathe Out

From ABC.net.au:

'A bar in Britain is offering the unique experience of entering a room filled with a breathable cocktail.

For five pounds ($10.50) visitors are allowed into a room filled with a cloud of vapourised gin and tonic.

Stays in the room are limited to one hour at a time, which a team of doctors has estimated is the equivalent of between one and two standard drinks.

A spokesman says patrons are being advised to "breathe responsibly".'

Excuse Me, I Think Your Act Is Dead

'DeadAct.com is an online archive of videos found in the public domain that show electronic performers blatantly faking their "live set". To qualify as a Dead Act, the performer must have pre set out their performance in such a way that if they were to drop dead, the set would keep playing on as normal. Bonus points for fake knob tweaking, failed attempts to play real instruments , and good orgasm faces. email me - deadact@gmail.com! ....Do they think we're stupid?'

Itchy Art

According to the ABC website (thanks to Westie for the link):

Seven young artists from Berlin are trying to stretch the boundaries of art by living in an Israeli museum for three weeks with lice in their hair.

"Art is no longer just a painting on the wall," Milana Gitzin-Adiram, chief curator of the Museum of Bat Yam near Tel Aviv, told Reuters.

"Art is life, life is art."

The exhibition has caused controversy - unintended, the artists say - in a country where the mention of lice may revive memories of Nazi propaganda that described Jews as "parasites".

The artists, who sleep, eat and bathe in the gallery, said the exhibition toyed with ideas about hosts and guests in line with a theme set by the museum and aimed to blur the boundaries between art and reality.

Meet Crip Chick

This is another stunning link I have nicked from Nix's blog. Check out Crip Chick! Especially this post from March 18, entitled 'Is this what they call pissing on pity?':

Just. Like. Everyone. Else. Except that particular statement never works. When people hear disabled people say that, they assume that we want to be able-bodied or that we want to somehow separate ourselves from disability. I am proud to be who I am and am not sure how this is message is confused with the wish to be treated equally, or just like everyone else. You will not hear me claim that disability does not define me, in fact, it is an integral part of who I am. Is identity not inherently connected to one’s experiences or how one is perceived?

This is not to say life is not a struggle when one does not fit into dominant culture. My life is one of resisting assimilation [being absorbed into another culture]and struggling to find pride in who I am. Assimilation comes in many forms. Sometimes it is subtle, like temporarily wishing I could take off the disabled/queer/Corean hat and just be a college student. Sometimes it’s more explicit, like the year I spent immersed in only country music and cowboy boots or whenever I choose advocacy over activism because I am buying into the messages that says it is the only way to do something.

Hilarious Blog

As ever, Ali comes up with the goods:

Stuff White People Like

Sample:The majority of white person art is created after a difficult breakup; films, indie music, and poetry are all kicked into high production during the end of a relationship. This helps train white people to prepare for the pain that is coming.

Once breakup proceedings have been initiated, a white person is immediately thrust into the center of attention in their circle of friends. During this time, they are permitted to talk at great lengths about themselves, listen to The Smiths, and get free dinners from friends who think “they shouldn’t be alone right now.”

Kiss Me Quick

Today's SMH brings the following news:

A woman bit off her ex-boyfriend's lower lip as they were kissing in bed, likely disfiguring him permanently, authorities said. The 49-year-old man and the woman kissed several times Monday night when, without provocation, she bit off his lip and spat it out, he told sheriff's deputies... Deputies reported finding the man's lip on the bedroom floor, covered with cat hair. Doctors at a hospital were unable to reattach the lip, and deputies said he was likely to remain disfigured.

FTMs And Pregnancy

I don't know what to make of all of this, really. But is certainly worth mentioning here! Two links that were sent to me by Bastian...

The first link is to Faster Than Life, and is a Q&A regarding the possibilty of FTM folk having safe and successful pregnancies and the obvious issues around being a 'pregnant man'.

The second is a review of Transparent, 'a documentary about 19 female-to-male transsexuals living in the United States who have given birth and, in all but a few stories, gone on to raise their biological children. ' Wow. Has anyone here seen this?

Sleazy Cabbies- The SX Article

Ah, it is fabulous to have friends in the media. The most amazing Katrina Fox followed up my 'creepy cabbies' email to her with this article in SX. I had't even read it and I had at least two people mention it to me when I was out clubbing, so its good to know that the message is getting out there. Now we just need to get the cabbies to realise that getting sleazy with 'female' customers, or anyone really, is not acceptable behaviour! Grrr!

Worms Who Like Girls Who Like Girls To Be Boys

According to today's SMH:

Lesbian laboratory worms have offered scientists evidence that sexual orientation is wired into the brain. Researchers altered circuits in the worms' brains so they were attracted to members of their own sex. Dr Jamie White, from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City who led the study, says the worms look like girls - but act and think like boys.

Beer, Boobs, Bitterness and Blokes

Today's SMH reports that 'Hundreds of men at the Bulga mine in the Hunter Valley have been attending classes on menopause and foreplay - because, according to management, a sexless miner "can get mighty grumpy at work" and affect production. And the men, aged from 20 to 60, have been transfixed, asking why women menstruate and seeking tips on how they can "explore the wife again".' In World affairs, we are told that 'Posters of a rosy, puffy cheeked newborn baby have provoked controversy in Italy because the infant is shown wearing a wristband name-tag with the word "homosexual" written on it. The photograph of the baby is part of a anti-discrimination campaign launched by Tuscany's regional government and is accompanied by the slogan: "Sexual orientation is not a choice."

Whilst MX tells us that 'The (travelling)Museum of Broken Relationships asks people to donate mementos of everything from short flings to painful divorces. Yesterday in Berlin, an axe used to break an ex's furniture was added to the 300 exhibits.' Also, 'An Australian barmaid has been fined for crushing beer cans between her bare breasts, while an off-duty colleague has been fined for hanging spoon's from her friend's nipples.' Whatever will they think of next then, hey?

Shock Value

John Rockwell writing 'about shock in art. Audiences and institutions have long believed that anything that unsettles is intended to provoke. The provocation hardly needs to be sexual. It can be childlike (''My 5-year-old could do that!'') or primitive (Gauguin) or political (Grosz) or distorted (Cubism) or conceptually unsettling (Duchamp's urinal; Cage's ''4' 33' '' of silence).

For a long while, when people raged against such provocations, I would take the defiant position of assuming, unless authoritatively informed otherwise, that the artist had no intention to provoke. Morton Feldman needed to write a six-hour string quartet. Philip Glass needed to spin out his deafening electronic-keyboard arpeggiations to the end of time. Maybe even Jeff Koons needed to depict coitus with his wife at the time, an Italian pornography star and Parliament member.'

('Reverberations; Shocking! Offensive! But Being Pleasant Is Beside The Point')
